What's Up Southeast Texas - May 2021

It is spring everywhere else, but May kicks off the summer in SETX! Pull out the jean shorts, sun dresses and sunscreen and go do something fun. Whether it’s crawfish, fried food on a stick, or beer or popcorn you’re craving, we have something for everyone this month!

If you’re looking for a reason to celebrate this month, here are a few: Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3-7, Cinco de Mayo is May 5, and Mother’s Day is May 9.

Mauriceville Crawfish Festival- May 1

If you’re a Southeast Texas native, you know crawfish is part of who we are. The Mauriceville Crawfish Festival is being put on by the Mauriceville Heritage Association THIS weekend. From 10am to 11pm you can enjoy live music and as much crawfish as your heart desires - or your stomach can handle. You can purchase tickets online in advance for $35.

Cinco de Mayo at Tacos La Bamba – May 5

If you’ve ever been to an event at Tacos La Bamba, you can confirm that they know how to throw a party! Cinco de Mayo is no exception! Visit Tacos La Bamba the evening of May 5 for music, food, and festivities!

Frank Sinatra Dinner at Fitch Futton BMT – May 6

Fitch Hutton will be hosting a Frank Sinatra themed dinner with a themed menu, glamorous dress code, and music to fit the theme. The menu includes shrimp cocktail, salad with Green Goddess dressing, NY strip with creamed spinach and Delmonico potatoes, and baked Alaska for dessert.

Boy’s Haven Gumbo Fest – May 8

Crawfish with a cause? Sign us up! Boys’ Haven is throwing their annual Crawfish Festival this year on May 8 from 11am - 6pm. To be extra cautious due to COVID-19, this event is drive-thru. You can pick up your crawfish box in the Parkdale Mall parking lot. All proceeds benefit Boys’ Haven. BONUS: You’ll see our Education First FCU volunteers out there ready to serve you!

Star Wars Trivia: May the Fourth Be with You – May 4

Every Stars Wars fan recognizes May 4th as a holiday, so why not celebrate? 5 Under Golf Center is hosting a Star Wars Trivia night. Sign up a 6 person team for $30 to play. Be sure to sport your favorite Star Wars costume for a chance to win prizes!

Texas Crab Festival – May 7- 9

Texas Crab Festival is just around the corner! Drive down to Crystal Beach for the biggest beach party of the year! This event is full of fun activities like a crab legs contest, two-step dance contest, wiener dog races, tournaments, rides, crabby games, an auction, and certified Texas Crab Festival 5K run. Classic Movie Nights – May 7, 14 & 21

Classic Movie Nights continue at the Jefferson Theatre this May with showings that will satisfy the whole family! Order your tickets online for Tangled on May 7, The NeverEnding Story on May 14, and Blade Runner on May 21. Doors open at 6pm and showtime is at 7pm.

Mother’s Day Weekend Market Pour Brothers – May 8

A brewery may not sound festive for the whole family, but at Pour Brothers Brewery, it is! Everyone is invited to come to the weekend market from noon to 5pm! There will be music, art, food trucks, beer, and local vendors. If you haven’t bought a Mother’s Day gift yet, this could be your opportunity.

YMBL State Fair – Education Fist Family Fun Night – May 25

The YMBL South Texas State Fair is BACK! The fair will be open from May 20-30. Make sure to visit our website to snag free fair entry tickets for Education First Family Fun Night on May 25. You can also download a coupon for $15 off a wristband that day!

If you’ve never been to a First Thursday, you are missing out! My Type - Girls Night – May 21

This one’s for the girls, and girls only! Bom Boms invites you to dress as “your type” and enjoy wings, games music and more. This event is 21+ and BYOB. Tickets are available online for $28.

Marvel Trivia – May 28

Are you the expert on all things Marvel? Put your knowledge to the test at Little Woodrow’s Marvel Trivia Night. To sign your team up, be sure to arrive at 6pm to add your names to the list. Trivia starts at 7pm and there are prizes for the winning teams. BONUS: They’re serving happy hour all day and crawfish beginning at 4pm.
