Ready or not, summer is right around the corner. And while Southeast Texas summers are hot as Hades, this time of year offers the chance to take a break from the hectic pace of our lives and unwind. No school lunches to back, no homework, no carpool….just saying it out loud is relaxing!
But, we know what you’re thinking…what are you going to do to keep the kids busy? We’ve compiled a list of fun and affordable activities you can do with your family, right here in Southeast Texas, that will help you get the most out of your summer.
Set Your Social Butterfly Free.
There’s plenty of long days in the summer to explore local haunts and discover some cool events. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the Beaumont Farmers Market where you can sample locally sourced produce. Or stroll the sidewalks and enjoy live music each month at First Thursday on Calder. And if you are feeling adventurous, check out Hoops and Wine – Mom’s Night Out every third Thursday at the Beaumont Art Studio.
What about kids? We’ve got you covered. Kids can run free at Tug boat Island, sprint through the sprinklers at the water pad at Rogers Park in Beaumont or pack a picnic and go feed the ducks at Doornbos Park in Nederland after the sun goes down. And don’t forget you can beat the heat with the Cinemark Summer Movie Clubhouse where kids pay only $1 for movies every Tuesday and Wednesday summer morning or enjoy Toddler Takeover every Wednesday morning at the Beaumont Childrens Museum. There are many free events that happen often, sometimes even weekly, that the whole family can enjoy. Be sure to check sites like Discover Beaumont and Beaumont CVB often to find out about upcoming events. Also, don’t forget to check out Groupon for access to coupons to local places as well!
Lend a Helping Hand.
We believe volunteering is a great way to serve your local community and get to meet new people – just ask our staff, who regularly donate their personal time through our Volunteer Investment Program (VIP). Southeast Texas has so many great opportunities that allow you to give back to the local community through volunteerism, and many even welcome students who need to earn service hours. Organizations such as such as the Southeast Texas Food Bank and The Humane Society of Southeast Texas are familiar to many, but there are also lesser known charities advancing great causes also looking for a helping hand, such as Beaumont Pets Alive. And if group activities aren’t your thing, did you know there are even virtual volunteer opportunities that you can participate in at your own pace, like Swim for MS. Sites such as Volunteer Match show you organizations that you can get involved with. So get out there and help make our community better today!
Make Friends with Mother Nature.
You might be thinking “Start a garden? In Southeast Texas? During the summer?!” We understand it can be extremely hot in Southeast Texas, especially during the summer. However, with the right amount of sunscreen, water, and your gardening hat, you can turn this experience into a lovely and rewarding project. Just make sure to do a little research before you dig in! One of the biggest mistakes a new gardener often makes is not knowing what plants will thrive in our hot and humid little corner of the state. Sites such as Zone9Garden.com will steer you in the right direction of what to plant, where and when to plant it.
Get Your Recreation On.
Love taking your boat and jet skis out on the water? Or hitting the open road in your camper or RV? Whether your find your fun on land or in the water, summer is prime time to enjoy it. Head on up to Sam Rayburn or Toledo Bend and get your recreation on!
If you don’t already own a recreational vehicle, this article might have you second guessing that decision. Check out some of these cool RV destinations in Texas. And if the lure of the open road is calling to you, we’re here to help you finance your fun with low rates and deferred payment options.
Giddyup to Galveston!
If you’re feeling like traveling a little beyond Southeast Texas, Galveston offers something for everyone. Everyone knows and loves Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn, plus Education First members can purchase discounted tickets for these parks online. Or, if Mother Nature and her natural beauty is more up your alley, why not take to the water in a kayak? Looking for some fun after the sun goes down, how about Movie or Music Nite on the Strand?
Step Out of Your Comfort Zone.
Take a class or go view an exhibit at The Art Studio. Ever wish you had stuck with music lessons when you were a kid? Why not give it another whirl at the Southeast Texas School of Music. Pack a midnight picnic under the stars. Take a cooking class. Take a dance class (yes, with other adults). Try your hand at a new hobby. Host a game night or wine tasting for friends. Do something that you wouldn’t normally do, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the memories you’ll make from throwing caution to the wind!
