6 Tips for Your Travels

Ahh, it’s vacation time. We can just taste the margaritas and feel the sand between our toes. There’s nothing like exploring a different part of the world and experiencing new things and creating lasting memories. As you prepare for your summer vacation, we’ve gathered 6 tips to help you with planning, saving money, and storing your vacation memories for a lifetime.

1. Take Advantage of the Free “Valet”

Download the free CardValet app, available for iPhone and Android, which allows you to control your debit card while you are away. CardValet gives you an option to receive alerts each time your card is used, turn your card “on” or “off” in case it gets lost or stolen, and even set spending limits if needed. This convenient app puts your mind at ease as you enjoy your vacation. Learn more about CardValet here.

2. Weather the Storm

Have you ever gone somewhere and thought “I didn’t realize it was going to rain! Now I have to go buy an umbrella!” We know, we’ve been there too. And if you’re not careful, it becomes easy to go buy a ton of items when you get to your destination that are essential to survive in the weather you are in. You might think “I’m going to the beach! All I need is my bathing suit and sunscreen!” And while you are right, it never hurts to double check and make sure there won’t be a rainy day while you are there. The same goes for colder destinations. If you are visiting somewhere like the mountains, make sure the temperature is not expected to be warmer than normal. After all, you don’t want to be stuck in warm weather wearing a sweater and beanie.

3. Don’t Forget About Us

We know you are planning to head out on vacation and leave all your troubles behind – and we don’t blame you! However, don’t forget to notify your bank that you will be out of town and let them know where you are going. This will help prevent your credit cards from being flagged as suspicious purchases and leaving you in a bind.

4. Plan Your Excursions and Dining Before You Get There

If you are an adventurous and “go with the flow” kind of person, then we understand that you might want to wait until you arrive at your destination to really plan things out. And that’s A-OK. However, if you are more of a planner, check sites like Groupon ahead of time to see what offers are available to the destination you are visiting. You can find great deals for entertainment and dining that are up to 70% off what you would normally pay. You still get to enjoy great entertainment and great food for a fraction of the cost. It’s a win-win!

5. Consider Paying for Purchases in Local Currency

If you are traveling internationally, it’s easy to use American currency for all purchases. However, depending on which country you visit, you will get more bang for your buck if you use local currency. No worries, we don’t want to figure out the math either. That’s why we’ve located this list that is updated daily to show what American dollars are worth in each country. Check it out here.

6. Take Lots of Photos

Whoever said a picture is worth a thousand words was really on to something. As a special bonus tip, we encourage you to take lots of photos and store them for a lifetime. Apps such as Google Photos or Amazon Prime Photo allow you to store unlimited amounts of photos without having to worry about memory. Or, if you want to take the old-school route, consider printing photos out and even making a scrapbook. In fact, you could add to the scrapbook as you continue to travel to different places. And while you’re at it, send us a postcard. We won’t deny it!
